How long should a relationship be?

i see tons of people in relationships for years and i was wondering how long should one really be? personally i think one year is enough to get to know a person and decide if you are compatible or not. if you are, you get engaged for one year then get married, if not, you part ways on peaceful terms after the year has ended. So what do you think, is one year long enough to be in a relationship?
